Wanna help?

Remember this picture? Last summer a few other volunteers and I put on a girls soccer day camp for girls in villages surrounding Kobuleti. It turned out to be very successful and we wanted to expand it this year to a regional overnight camp, placing more emphasis on leadership, self-esteem and healthy living. We changed the name to SELF Camp (Self Esteem and Leadership through Fitness) and have been working all year organizing it and trying to get funding. Unfortunately the grant we were hoping for fell through so we've been frantically trying to find funding over the last few months and have been forced to postpone the camp until September (it was supposed to be this month). We put up a link on the Peace Corps website asking for donations, so if you are interested here it is.. you can donate any amount, and its tax deductible!

Opportunities for girls here are very limited, especially in the villages where we are targeting. Schools rarely provide health related classes and doctors are basically nonexistent in the villages so there's a lot of wrong information floating around out there: water makes you fat, girls should not play sports, in order to lose weight you should not eat, etc. We are working with 12 Georgian counselors to try to educate and motivate these girls. The camp will last for 3 days and 2 nights and the money will pay for the hotel and transportation for the girls along with equipment and food. We will have guest speakers come (doctors and women athletes), conduct leadership and teamwork activities, play a variety of sports, teach basic things like how to stretch and give examples of various excercises they can do in their home during the winter. We want these girls to have the same camp experiences that so many of us were blessed to have in America and also not to be afraid to excercise in their village despite opposition from neighbors and relatives. For most of these girls, this will be their first time away from home and one of the most exciting things that has ever happened to them. So, if you have some extra cash and need something to do with it, feel free to help out. The girls who were accepted will be extremely disappointed if we tell them that the camp has been cancelled!
